Transforming performance and sustaining success in tactical supply chain & logistics

In a complex business, comprising 13 offshore production assets as well as onshore operations and support functions, having the right materials and equipment available to those doing work offshore can have enormous significance, to safety as well as to operational and financial performance.

The challenge of ensuring the prompt fulfilment of orders placed by platforms, was made more difficult by a legacy of many different procurement processes and systems that existed because the business had been formed through a number of mergers and acquisitions, and by the fact that the procurement team was inexperienced and lacked both confidence in themselves, and the confidence of the broader organisation.

Evolve worked with the new head of procurement to first of all agree with all interested parties, a common vision of the "to be" tactical procurement process and a target for delivery (for on-time-in-full) that was stretching enough to get everyone's attention and to ensure that people recognised that they would need to learn some new approaches to managing the process, if they were to be successful.

Next, Evolve coached the inexperienced procurement team through the process of engaging both their customers and their suppliers so that they could develop workable solutions to problems, that would have the support of all involved parties.

Finally, Evolve supported the team as they implemented the new processes and designed and installed a robust management system that gave them the information they would need to identify and fix problems as or before they occurred.

At the end of the six-month programme, the team had been able to take order fulfilment performance to 40% OTIF - estimated to be a four-fold improvement.

However, more significantly, the team was able to take what they had learnt to continue to make improvements after the Evolve team had left, so that six month later OTIF had risen to 90% - a truly world-class performance.
